It was one of Matt Mulleweg’s posts—I can’t remember where, on his blog, twitter—whatever… But, I remember him posting about the use of em-dash (—) to me. I had always used it in WordPress as a Site Title — Page Title separator, it was always &emdash;
to me. But, along with commas, parenthesis, semicolons, colons, and ellipsis—the Em-dash was going to become another way I diced up my writing style.
This is how I write…(interjecting my thoughts like this with parenthesis: lots of colons); and I probably used the semicolon all wrong too. My style of writing is to write like I talk—I know that’s probably bad—but it’s just how I like to write: I’ve accepted it. I’m probably using the Em-dash wrong too, but it’s just part of my writing style now.
I worry people think I use AI to write my content on this blog because of it. Sure, admittedly, I use LLMs to help me flesh out what I am going to say sometimes—but I always write the content by hand myself. But my overuse—and probably my improper use—of the Em-dash might get people thinking I just copy and paste that slop right over.
No—I just like using it—for better…or for worse.
